Consumer Road Test ratings for 2004 shows that its engines need high rpm to deliver
decent power specially the 180-hp version. Riding quality varies with model and
equipment. The 16-inches wheels become jittery over patchy pavement and optional
17-inches tires increase harshness. It is more prone to crosswind wander at highway
speeds but with responsive steering and turns in fast changes of direction.
Enough space provides good comfort on long trips but driver's seat lack adequate
lateral support. Tall doorways, wide door opening and narrow floor-level passageways
make way for easy exit and entrance. For 2003 Matrix, linear and quick handling
receives notable rating. The 4WD system shows aggressiveness on snow-covered ice
highways compared to the front- wheel drives.
Power of XRS in front-wheel drives comes from a 1.8litre DOHC four cylinder with
variable valve timing and lift. Standard shifting is through a 6-speed manual
transmission which takes a little getting used to. Noisy engine is the negative
feature of 2002 Matrix yet with excellent interiors for comfortable rides.
